Are you truly Healthy??...You decide
Dimensions of Health & Wellness:
When most people report on their health and wellness, they focus on the physical signs, symptoms and manifestations. Somehow, our system of healthcare has been aligned with treating physical symptoms and manifestations. For a very long time, particularly for sub-groups of the population, dimensions of wellness such as the mental have been ignored, not emphasized and even stigmatized.
The Whole You:
For many, this focus on the physical to the exclusion of the other dimensions of health and wellness has culminated in the continued weakening of other dimensions of health and wellness and the exacerbation of physical ailments.
Depending on the diagram or the specific model that is used, eight to ten dimensions of health and wellness have been identified. These are:
- Physical- incorporating the development of a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition, physical activity, developing habits of adequate rest and sleep, participating in routine health screenings and avoiding the use of alcohol, tobacco and other harmful substances.
- Spiritual- involves deriving meaning and purpose in life which relate to our beliefs and value system. It involves "getting outside of ", "transcending" the 'physical' self.
- Emotional- involves acknowledging feelings and taking the liberty to express them in healthy ways as opposed to suppressing them. This may also require reaching out for needed help.
- Occupational- involves the assessment and necessary adjustment steps regarding whether your occupation is a good fit with respect to your knowledge, skills and abilities. This also includes the congruence between personal values and the occupational culture, and whether there is work-life balance and the ability to share and celebrate accomplishments.
- Financial- involves the ability to earn income, sufficiency of income to meet basic needs as well as provide for enjoyment of leisurely activities. This incorporates planning and management and saving towards life, emergency and retirement goals.
- Intellectual- involves the potential for continued growth and evolvement by utilizing the mind. This enables the brain to be constantly active and the horizon to be widened. It involves learning new things and exploring new topics, interests and perhaps hobbies.
- Social- involves developing and maintaining a 'trusted' support system of not only family members but friends, and possibly colleagues and others with whom you feel a sense of community. These alliances exist not only for the benefit of mutual support but also as a built-in system of accountability.
- Environmental- involves the ability to have access to nutritious foods (not food deserts), clean water, clean air, a feeling of safety in the surroundings, and reduction of waste by reusing and recycling resources as possible.
Some Models have included these 2 Dimensions:
- Creativity- involves the focus on self-expression by developing, enhancing and/or showcasing unique skills and abilities. Research findings have suggested a connection between creativity and well-being.
- Cultural- involves awareness of, understanding and respect for other cultures and diversity while also valuing one's cultural background.
It is so important to note that all the dimensions of health and wellness are intricately connected, and therefore all have a direct effect on our health. All dimensions need to be developed to achieve optimal health, wellness and wholeness. When dimensions of health and wellness are weakened, they have an effect on each other and on overall health and wellness. Ultimately, the physical health that we strive to protect suffers as a result of the impact of other weakened dimensions of health.
It is not uncommon that a few dimensions of health and wellness are well developed and strengthened in an individual. However, this is often to the detriment of other important dimensions of health and wellness which may be weakened or totally ignored.
The key is to aim for as much balance as possible among the dimensions of health and wellness while acknowledging that some areas will be naturally stronger than others. It is also important to note that some dimensions of health and wellness that you have strengthened may be dimensions of weakness in a spouse, friend or other acquaintance. It is imperative that we show empathy as we all navigate strengthening and balancing our own weakened dimensions.
As with all lifestyle changes, it is important to set small, realistic, and attainable goals and to attempt to move towards their attainment is small steps at a time. Acknowledge setbacks and keep moving again one step at a time, one day at a time...towards optimal health and wellness, towards "Wholeness."

Thank you for shedding some light on all the different dimensions of health & wellness! Excellent post! For any readers who are interested in setting small goals to optimize areas of their wellness, I suggest using the acronym S.M.A.R.T (be sure that your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely).
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to health, the main two that immediately come to mine are physical and spiritual health. I think we each have certain dimensions that we prioritize but I can definitely see how striving for that balance between each of the 8 could bring me closer to reaching "wholeness" which I strive for.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do agree...that we do prioritize certain dimensions. I definitely think that making the Spiritual a priority can have a positive effect on other dimensions such as emotional, social, intellectual which in turn would have a positive effect on other dimensions.
DeleteSmall steps in the right direction. Moving towards a goal every day is necessary.
